We believe our experiences of 'real life' is as important if not arguably more important than qualifications alone!

A successful professional counselling agency does not happen overnight, you may have heard the saying 'Rome was not built in a day', well neither has Ivy Counselling, however, you can be assured having completed an arduous management course in 1988 successfully qualified to Diploma Level in Supervisory Management and pleased to say the past 24 years has been used supervising and managing individuals as well as groups so the right people are at the helm steering Ivy Counselling.

With personal experience of living with mental problems, and through the best part of a decade, working for the NHS within Mental Health services, all we can say is we are passionate about Mental Health.  We know first hand the impact mental health problems can have on someone's life and the upset this can bring to relationships with family and friends.  We know the despair and chaos these feelings can bring to a life and how alone and isolating these feelings can make you feel in the world.

We know 1 in 4 people in this country will experience a Mental Health problem, at some point in their life, and those who receive help and support can go on to live and regain a full enjoyable life.  We also recognise and know how sharing these feelings with a qualified therapist can enable real change to occur.  Through talking to someone, who is willing to truly listen and to be open and non-judgemental, can help make a vitial difference to anyone's life; anything is possible when you begin to take responsibility.

What is certain for all of us is, at some point in our lives we will experience some form of loss not necessarily the death of a person but loss of a pet, relationship, job, friendship, health all of which impact on us in one way or another, and we all have to go through what we call 'the grieving process' in order to come out the other end.  We  believe we are equipped to work in this area having trained and worked for CRUSE Bereavement, St Lukes Hospice and Mount Edgecumbe Hospice. In addition CRUSE Supervisor trained.

It was only a couple of decades ago that homosexuality was considered by the World Health Organisation to be a mental illness.  This pathology of sexual variance has affected the way many therapists view sexual difference.

We adopt a sexual - affirmative stance and DO NOT see sexual or gender variance as a sickness.  We work with gender and sexual diversity clients in an affirmative manner and with genuine accepting warmth.

Our clients come from all walks of life, we do not discriminate against anyone and welcome you all.  Male, female, young and old, individuals, couples, lesbian, gay, straight, bisexual,  a sexual or transgender and others who identify as being gender or sexual diversities.

Sadly most counselling training establishments fail to address issues of sexual diversity sexuality in their curricula therefore we felt it important to enhance our learning in London by gaining knowledge in Contemporary Perspectives on Gender & Sexuality, Overview of Sexual Minority Therapy, Understanding the Social Context of Sexual Minorities, Working with Internalised Oppression, Coming Out Issues and Professional and Ethical Boundaries.

When you hear or read the word STRESS what does that conjure up for you? Are you aware there are many kinds of stress; Physical, Chemical, Mental, Emotional, Nutritional, Traumatic and Psycho-Spiritual, the impact of stress can be phenomenal and should not be under estimated.

The amount of days lost in the workplace each year are increasing and to be honest can you ever see the trend set to decline?  Stress is NOT a weakness and you do not have to suffer.

Stress can be destructive which is the main reason we thought obtaining a Diploma in Stress Management was essential, this way we feel sufficiently confident to not only work with our clients but able to manage our own.
